One of the main things that people don't realize is that UO cannot be patched completely for this shard, for many shards for that matter as the free servers are not setup to use the newest clients as of yet.
This means you need to stop your patching before it gets past a certain point (right now that is 5.0.9.1 as of 8/28/07). In order to do this you have to be able to stop the "process" in the Task Manager, twice and delete the patch file. So here is how you do this.
BE SURE TO READ THE STEPS BELOW BEFORE PATCHING
There are 2 versions of this system that I've explained here, the first is for the timid not so brave person that wants to make sure they can play the game and dont' mind missing out on a few things for now. The second is for the more experienced person that has quick reflexes and doesn't mind reinstalling again if they mess up 
Not so Brave Version
1. If you have installed UO and patched it fully, unfortunately for you, you will have to uninstall it and reinstall it and repatch, as you have patched up too far if it's fully patched, and you won't be able to see a lot of things in game that you need to see. So start here and uninstall and reinstall the game, then go to step 2.
If you have not patched fully and just want to patch further or up to the 6.0 then go to your ultima online folder which is typically C:\Program Files\EA Games\Ultima Online Mondain's Legacy and find the UOpatch.exe file (make a shortcut to your desktop for it if it makes it easier to get to again later).
2. Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to open your Windows Task Manager and go to the Processes tab. Hit the button above all the file names called "Image Name" (yes that is a button not just a category name), and make sure the alpha list is backwards so that the UO files will show up at the top area and you won't have to search for them later.
3. Start the patching via either the UOpatch.exe mentioned in step 1 or via the shortcut on your desktop from the fresh install and let it run only until it stops the first time. DO NOT start the patching again or even try to log in, this will again start the patching process and you need to do some process killing before hand.
4. Once the patching has stopped at the first patch set, go into your processes window and find the UO.exe and the UOPatch.exe files listed there, highlight them and hit the "End Processes" button to turn those processes off. This tells the computer to stop patching.... kind of lol.
5. DELETE the shortcut to patching now, you won't need it. If you try to use it again, you could get yourself stuck in a patching loop. Use Razor now to finish this process.
Be ready again with the processes window for as soon as you use Razor it will try to start patching again. Log in on Razor as you would to log into the shard, once the patching starts again go to the Processes window and once again End Process for those 2 files you turned off in the last step. This should stop the patching process again and for good.
6. Once again Log into Razor to enter the shard and this time you should not have any problems with it patching on you, you should also have client version 5.0.6b or something not to far after it maybe up to 5.0.7 or so.
Brave Version
1. Use RunUO or ConnectUO by trying to log in to start the patching process again (using the UOpatch file can sometimes make it loop and mess up). WATCH for the patch to reach downloading the 5.0.9.1 client version and when it has finished installing all the letters of 5.0.9.1 HIT THE CANCEL BUTTON AS SOON AS IT STARTS DOWNLOADING THE 6.0 VERSION . Be sure not to let it start "installing" the 6.0 version at all that is the main key here. This should stop the patching and you should now be at the last client version available in 5.0.9.1.
**NOTE** You can actually stop the download at any version in this second phase of the patch so don't worry if you stop it too soon.
4. Go into your processes window and find the UO.exe and the UOPatch.exe files listed there, highlight them and hit the "End Processes" button to turn those processes off. This tells the computer to stop patching.... kind of lol.
5. DELETE the shortcut that UO created on your desktop to patching now, you won't need it. If you try to use it again, you could get yourself stuck in a patching loop.
6. Go to your UO folder (whereever you installed it to, typically that is C:\Program Files\EA Games\Ultima Online Mondain's Legacy or whatever version of UO you installed or of course if you installed it to a different location you hopefully know where that is . Find the folder named "patch" and open it up and inside you should see a patch file of some sort. Delete that file and now the folder should be empty.
7. Once again Log into Razor to enter the shard and this time you should not have any problems with it patching on you, you should also have client version 5.0.6b or something not to far after it maybe up to 5.0.9.1.

Updated to reflect the more recent info I just learned for patching a little farther if you're a little quicker and braver and not so timid about things on a computer. I would imagine eventually it will be needed to be able to see some of the more useful things. I noticed some unused tiles when I started the Marbles quest the other day which one happened to be a Rose in a vase on the Shrinks desk so the patching farther up corrected this for me.
Don't be afraid, it's only a game and the worse that happens is you miss the mark and it starts installing 6.0 and you start over lol. That's worse case scenario guys and the worse this causes is for you to have to redo your desktop and settings after reinstall, it won't break the game or your computer if you don't catch that 6.0 downloading so breath and go for it
