A year or more... Had it really been so long since I had been home? Brushing tangled greenery out of my way around to the front of the house, I realized it had been. As I neared my steps, a slight gust of wind caught my wind chimes, seeming to welcome me home. I sighed, so much had changed within myself and happened to me in a year, I could only imagine the changes that had happened in my homeland.
Before I climbed my steps, out of habit I checked my mailbox. There was a letter from Luc! I had so missed my friends, I couldn't wait to find everyone. But, first I had to get out of my traveling clothes and make sure my home hadn't turned into a bear den while I was gone.
I entered, and it was like a time warp. All my Christmas decorations from 2009 were still up, some of my birthday packages were still on the sideboard. But the best thing of all, my wonderful clothes closet was intact in my room. Neither rats or moths had chewed a single thing. My mood lightened and I twirled around in sheer happiness, my mood becoming lighter and lighter by the minute. I looked in at my sunken tub longingly and turned away to wash up at the sink. The quicker I could get cleaned up and changed the quicker I could run around the guild town and then visit Brit. Opening up my locked cabinet, I took out all my rune books. Running my hand down the cover, I grinned thinking of the fun I had exploring and marking all my runes.
Stepping outside, I called Imriel to me and readied to leave. Rubbing his silky black coat, I took a deep breath and let the familiar smell of that salt air bring the memories flooding back. I had some of my best times here at home and had missed it more than I had realized.
Opening up my runebook, I selected one to my guildhouse and spoke those words that hadn't passed my lips in so long, but came forth as smoothly as my own name. "Kal Ort Por" In an instant I found myself on the walkway in front of my home in INF town. A shiver ran through me as Imri and I slowly made our way to the porch. I could sense evil, but could see no traces of it. I spared but a moment to look around the house. There looked to be no damage to the building, and since I had nothing in it yet, there wasn't much to check.
I looked out the window and could see a corner of Luc's roof. Grinning, I headed over to his house, still on the lookout for the unseen evil I could sense. After knocking for a few moments, my curiosity got the better of me, and I left to ride around the town.
The cobblestones were broken in spots, houses were gone, guild buildings were gone and there didn't seem to be another soul in the town. We made our way slowly along the river south of INF town as I pondered what could have happened. Our once thriving town was now a ghost town!
Once again opening my rune book, I recalled to Brit to see if someone there could fill me in on some of the things that had happened lately. Maybe someone could tell me where my guild went.
Passing the bank I didn't see anyone I knew. Only a couple people relaxing in comfortable looking chairs. Where were the crowds, the people walking around with their pets, the adventurers?
Elation giving way to bewilderment, I decided it was time to cheer myself up. A smile slowly growing on my downcast face, I checked my funds and headed of to one of my all time favorite things besides playing with my pets, shopping!
Picking up a couple new outfits I headed to the dye house. Ahhh, now this was something that hadn't changed much. Beautiful colors were everywhere I looked. The smells of the new clothes, my pleasure in the rainbow of colors, and the wonderful feel of some new clothes against my travel weary skin perked me up right away. One more thing would cement my mood.
Imri and I recalled and I found us outside my favorite cave. SO many hours had been spent in here treasure hunting and exploring. Asking Imri to stay, I glanced down and remembered I had left my armor at home. No matter, this would be a good test to see if I could still sneak around in the dark.
Entering the cave, I hid myself well, seeming to almost blend in with the walls. The smell of sulpher slightly burned my nose, both familiar and unpleasant at the same time. Stealthily moving forward, I could hear low rumblings and that familiar scraping noise. My beloved dragons were right ahead. Leaning against a boulder I stayed still and quiet, just watching them for a time.
Some hours had passed and the inactivity allowed the fatigue from the road to set in. With one last glance at the majestic reptiles, I made my way back to the outside of the cave. Blinking at the sudden light flooding my eyes, I rested a hand against Imri for balance, and then mounted up.
Back home, Imri grazing happily outside, I laid in bed and thought about my day. Lots of ups and downs, but overall, I was glad to be home I thought to myself. The soothing sounds of my waterfall helping me drift off into sleep.
