This is a beautiful idea and a great way to say thank you to someone. INGREDIENTS: 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast (3 teaspoons) 1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C) 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided 3 cups white sugar, divided 3 cups milk, divided 3 half gallon size Ziplock-type baggies DIRECTIONS: 1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand 10 minutes. In one baggie, combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. Zip closed and mix thoroughly or flour will lump when milk is added. Pour in 1 cup milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Zip closed and knead until thoroughly mixed. Consider this day 1 of the 10 day cycle. Leave at room temperature. 2. On days 2, 3 and 4: knead once a day for 3 minutes. Day 5: add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Knead well for 3 minutes. Days 6, 7, 8 and 9: knead only for 3 minutes each day. 3. Day 10: add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Knead for 3 minutes or until well mixed. Remove 1 cup of mixture and place it in a clean ziplock baggie for a friend. Remove another 1 cup of mixture, place it in a clean ziplock baggie for another friend. Copy the recipe and give it to them with their starter. Remove another 1 cup of the mixture and place it in a bowl to make your first loaf of bread. Store the remaining 1 cup starter in a container in the refrigerator for another loaf tomorrow, or make another kind of bread.

Now that you have your friendship bread starter, how do you make bread with it? Here are two variations, one for cinnamon loaf and one for a chocolate loaf for those with a sweet tooth. Each cup of starter will make two loaves of bread. Experiment with your favorite combinations, and enjoy. Cinnamon Friendship breadINGREDIENTS: 1 cup Amish Friendship Bread Starter 2/3 cup vegetable oil 3 eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease 2 (9x5 inch) loaf pans. 2. In a large bowl, combine the Amish bread starter with oil, eggs, 2 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix well. Pour into prepared loaf pans. 3. Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes. Chocolate Friendship bread:INGREDIENTS: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup white sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 (5.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix 1 cup Amish Friendship Bread Starter 1 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup milk 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease two 9x5 inch loaf pans. In a large mixing bowl, stir together all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, chocolate pudding. Make a well in the center of this mixture. Add Amish friendship bread starter, vegetable oil, milk, eggs and vanilla extract; mix well. Pour batter into prepared loaf pans. Bake in preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean, about 60 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes before removing from pan.
