The answer? Smokeless, spitless SNUS, pronounced 'Snoose' like 'Goose'.
There are many options available to successfully deliver nicotine to the brain and satisfy our addiction, the most dangerous method by far is fire-curing tobacco. Tobacco combustion produces over 3000 toxic chemicals that cause a range of health issues from lung cancer to diabetes to endothelial dysfunction. The carbon monoxide from smoking remains in the body for up to 24 hours, damaging blood vessels, causing platelets to stick together leading to heart disease, and even erectile dysfunction in men. The CO also makes the skin dry and unappealing to the eye. The smoke from a burning cigarette is very hot and burns the aveoli in the lungs and with each cigarette you are effectively burning tiny holes in your lungs that will NEVER repair.
However, the solution isn't the 'quit or die' method that the anti-tobacconists propagate. Nicotine is about as harmless as caffeine is, indeed the health problems do not arise from nicotine administration but from smoke. Breathing in any smoke, whether from burning tobacco, or burning wood, or even a barbecue contains free radicals that damage cellular DNA leading to cancer, and the smoke itself is enough to lead to emphysema. So, what do we do about?
Well, we certainly don't chew gum or put patches on our arms because we want tobacco. Well, I do at least. There is something about the smell and taste of tobacco that I enjoy and I'm not ready to give it up. So I've switched to SNUS - the original Swedish SNUS of course.
SNUS is 98% safer than a cigarette and delivers far more nicotine than any single cigarette of any brand. SNUS is a moist tobacco that is both smokeless and spitless. Many brands come portioned in small tea bags and are placed between the upper lip and gum. Within a minute you begin to feel a heavy nicotine rush that lasts for about 45 minutes to a few hours for some people (including me). The portion remains in the mouth for about 30 minutes and is spit out like a piece of gum afterwards.
Swedish SNUS is the best in my opinion because it is regulated. The cancer causing agent in tobacco are the nitrosamines. Swedish SNUS is regulated to contain only 2 parts per million of this cancer causing agent which is significantly less than is in smoke. Furthermore, tobacco is actually an antioxidant and this property makes SNUS about as safe as a cup of coffee (though a little more dangerous). Smoking can lead to oral cancer, but there is little evidence to suggest that SNUS causes oral cancer, and the risk for oral cancer is less in SNUS users than in tobacco smokers.
Also, because you are not smoking anything into the lungs, the only risk you have of developing lung cancer comes from your previous smoking habit. SNUS can not cause lung cancer, even though a few articles out there say that is does. It is impossible because you aren't breathing in SNUS, you aren't even swallowing it!
The only cancer risk for SNUS users that I know of is pancreatic cancer. So of course, ditching tobacco altogether is always best. The risk for pancreatic cancer is 4 in 100,000 non-tobacco users, 8 in 100,000 SNUS users and 12 in 100,000 tobacco smokers.
Further, I feel it should be noted that because SNUS does contain trace amounts of carcinogens, it has been banned by the European Union - which is hypocritical in my opinion because cigarette combustion produces far more carcinogens.
My goal has always been to smoke socially, but nicotine is so addictive that I started smoking by myself as well. I was smoking around 3 - 5 cigarettes a day, and even more on stressful days or days that I spend the night out with the guys and our girls. Ever since I have switched to SNUS, I have met my goal and I only smoke socially. Even in social situations I have been replacing cigarettes with SNUS because I don't like the way the carbon monoxide makes me feel, as most SNUS users will agree. In fact, tobacco fans who have switched to SNUS say they have no desire for a cigarette in any situation and will only SNUS.
The benefits SNUS has brought me:
I am able to run and work out efficiently again without my bronchial tubes burning.
My body is able to repair itself as efficiently after a workout as when I was a non-tobacco user.
My skin looks and feels much better.
I can sing much better again as my lung capacity has increased.
I can concentrate a lot better in lectures as I don't feel the need for a cigarette and can SNUS in class.
Non-smoking establishments don't bother me because I can SNUS to my hearts desire.
SNUS is a lot cheaper than cigarettes so I've saved a lot of money.
My teeth are whiter, and my clothes and apartment no longer smell like stale tobacco smoke.
When I feel stressed, I've stopped reaching for a cigarette and have started going to the gym again instead.
And many more.
The only set-back is that I've begun to gain weight; I can notice the weight gain, but others apparently can't. This was expected given that many factors are attributed to weight loss in cigarette smokers and not just the nicotine alone. I can only assume that if I quite tobacco altogether, then my weight gains would be worse as my body tries to re-adjust its metabolism.
I feel the need to pass this information on to others and I hope that this could save the lives of a few smokers on here. Remember, it's not the tobacco, it's the smoke. SNUS on people!
Peace,
Mohamed
